Wild Sweet Orange
http://www.wildsweetmusic.com/

Again I come across a band and album that I love only to discover that they have broken up already. Wild Sweet Orange, from Alabama, released We Have Cause To Be Uneasy in 2008. They announced their breakup September 2010. when did I discover them? March 30th, 2001. It’s a bummer, but that should stop you from becoming a fan. Uneasy is such a great album, that it’s worth the disappointment of knowing that there will be no other albums from this band. Who knows, the purchasing power of the fans of this bloog could resurrect the band with a reuinion tour and a new album. Stranger things have happened.

“House Of Regret” is a beautifully crafted rock song. The song starts off slow, sad and reflective. You can feel the remorse bubble over into anger through the course of the song. I play it at loud volumes, I suggest you do the same.

Kanye West
http://kanyewest.com/

I ain’t going to bed no time soon / And when I do, I’m sleeping in my mama’s room!

This is supposedly a bogus version of Kanye West’s much speculated-about song Mama’s Boyfriend. We had heard a capella versions of it when Kanye was doing rhymes at facebook and twitter headquarters. It was supposed to be on the album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Dark Fantasy, or as a Bonus Track. It was not released as either. Word was that the song meant so much to him that he wanted it to be perfect before it was released. Having it released the way it has was really fired Kanye up. Here is the note from the label about it:

The version of the Kanye West recording “Mama’s Boy” that arrived on blog sites earlier this week is entirely bogus and unsanctioned, and violates the artist’s creative intentions. As is often the unfortunate case, an unknown party or parties got a hold of Kanye West’s vocal track and added their own soundbed to it, effectively and falsely releasing it as a Kanye West track from the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sessions. The result in no way resembles the final song Kanye West intended his fans to hear, and he is deeply disappointed that one of the most personal, meaningful and special songs he has ever written would reach people in this way. Needless to say, measures are being taken to identify and prosecute the persons responsible for leaking this material.

I’m too afraid to put it on my servers. Here is the link to download it from Mediafire. Hurry! won’t be there long!

Italo Disco is something I haven’t listened to for a long time. I used to throw some in my sets from time to time, back when I used to DJ regularly. Songs like this always remind me of my old buddy CB4.

Glass Candy is from Portland, Oregon. That voice you hear is vocalist Ida No and the music is produced by Johnny Jewel. The song comes off the EP “Feeling Without Touching.”

Kanye West

I had plans to write about some punk albums this week. I had plans to do a lot of things. I’m in the weeds at work. I’ll be in the weeds well into the new year.

Really, I just never got around to listening to the punk albums I wanted to talk about  for the post.

Honestly? I just still can’t stop listening to the new Kanye album.

In the near future I am making the staff give me the top ten albums released this year for a week of “Best Of” posts at the end of the month.

I’ll give you my number one album now. It’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Lyrically and musically it’s fucking fantastic! You already know how I feel about that album since I wrote it up a few weeks back. Since I am under the gun though, you get more Kanye. This time it’s the leak and remix promo Kanye is doing for his fans. In August Kanye West proclaimed on twitter (of course…) that he would release a  new joint from our family on his website every Friday until xmas.

He dubbed it G.O.O.D. Fridays and then the gems started dropping. I was there every Friday like a hungry dog begging for a biscuit.

Power Remix Track Art

The first track dropped was a remix of the song “Power” off the then yet unreleased new album. The song featured Jay-Z and Swizz Beats and mashes up Snap’s “I’ve Got The Power.” It’s got hot, hot alternate verses from what ended up on the album version.

We livin’ in that 31st century, futuristic fly shit

The penthouse is the projects and everybody flies private

New watch, know what time it is, watch us (You see us)

They can’t stop us, prophets, beyotches

There were 12 other releases packaged up into the G.O.O.D Friday project, and then  nothing new after My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was released. I’m assuming Yeezy just wanted to make sure the focus stayed on the new album for a few weeks before he starts back up on the G.O.O.D. Fridays series. That would make sense anyways. One can hope! You can check out the thirteen tracks for yourself here. An email address gets you access to download them all. I suggest you do. Then buy his new album if you haven’t already.

I heard the whole thing

I have always said that insanity and genius share a very thin line.

This is the perfect sentence to describe Chicago rapper Kanye West. West is quirky and erratic at times. He says and does things without thinking about them first. For example, Kanye goes off script at a Katrina Relief benefit concert and says “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” (well some of us were already thinking that). There’s also the Swift incident at the 2009 MTV Music Awards. On the music side of things, Kanye has redefined the rap and hip-hop games. Maybe there is a correlation between Kanye’s personal and romantic life unravelling with the quality of his work.

It’s not unusual is it? I think some of the most amazing art has been produced by troubled people during troubled times. Mozart, Beethoven, John Mayer… I think people just write Kanye off as an asshole and hate on everything he does. Like Batman says, “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” I wonder if Biggie and Tupac would have had similar problems if their lives were not taken so early. Tupac in particular had potential for violence and quirky behavior. Regardless, he’s loved by everyone who appreciates rap and hip-hop.

I empathize with Kanye though. I know what it feels like to have everything fall apart. Everything could even seem to be going great, but you keep burning bridges and breaking hearts with every step. I know how it feels to have lost love and lost your mother. West described losing his mother like “losing an arm and a leg and trying to walk through that.” I’ve been there. That pain I felt affected many around me who loved me. Instead of fixing it, you keep chipping away at the foundations. Chip away until it all comes crashing down around you. Although, unlike Kanye, I can’t get centered in Paris while working as a shoe designer for Louis Vuitton.

Banned album art for
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Let’s have a toast for the genius! On November 22, 2010 West’s latest album will be released. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is Kanye’s best album, and might be one of the best Hip-Hop albums in the last ten years. Not easy to say. I feel like arguing with myself about it. With every spin of this record though, I believe it more and more.

You know that this is not going to be a basic hip-hop album from the first 30 seconds or so of the opening track of the album. The track, called “Dark Fantasy”, features a rap/spoken word intro from Nicki Minaj. Minaj is an up-and-coming rapper with a British accent that really sets off the intro in my opinion.

You might think you’ve peeped the scene, you haven’t.
The real one’s far too mean.
The watered down one, the one you know; was made up centuries ago.
It made it sound all whack and corny, yes it’s awful, blasted boring.
Twisted fiction, sick addiction, but gather ’round children, zip it listen!

When you hear that first track, you can hear how Kanye has really stepped up his game on the production front. Yeezy’s willing to experiment and stretch with his sound. This isn’t the same cat who just speeds up Dr. Dre drum beats and vocals. He’s grown more confident and is less worried about experimenting with new sounds. This experimentation doesn’t just end or level off with the first track. EVERY track on this album sounds fresh and exciting.

The real highlight for me is a track toward the end of the record. Track 11 is “Blame Game” featuring John Legend and comes in at almost 8 minutes. Although the final 2 minutes is Chris Rock going on with a skit that is slightly funny, but a whole lot heartbreaking. John Legend is such a talent and probably deserves a ton of credit for how dope this track is. West doesn’t disappoint either. His raps are spat through venom and bile, tears and blood. Yeezy does some interesting effects on his vocal in this song. Perhaps it’s the “voices” in his head. You’ll have to hear it for yourself.

On a bathroom wall I wrote “I’d rather argue with you than to be with someone else.”

I hope that you can’t relate to the story told in this song. It’s the worst kind of love. The worst kind of lust. It’s painful heartbreak. It might be your fault. It might be the world against you. It might be that bitch (or asshole) is just crazy. I read somewhere that Kanye considers this his favorite song from his new album. There is no question it’s my favorite track on any of his albums. Troubled equals great art.

Don’t forget to check out KanyeWest.com if you find any of this interesting. Ye has been releasing a free song under the G.O.O.D. Friday project (GOOD Music Records is Kanye’s record label) for the last 13 weeks. There are some real gems to grab over there.

There is even a 30 minute video for the track “Runaway” on the new album. My only suggestion is watch it in 1080p… it’s beautifully shot, but awfully weird.

I thought about jumping…

I was so sure that I had written about William Fitzsimmons on the inALLcaps Music Blog. I was beginning to panic that I never actually published it, or maybe I dreamt it.

Then I realized what I had wrote was in fact research for a podcast we mentioned him on.

William Fitzsimmons, if you haven’t caught that particular episode of the podcast, was born the youngest child of two blind parents who were the occasional musicians. William was a psychotherapist before deciding to record some songs at home that would become his initial debut CD, Until We Are Ghosts.

Fast-forward past two more albums, 2006’s Goodnight and 2008’s The Sparrow and the Crow, both about divorce (the former about his parents, the later his own) and we have 2010’s Derivatives.

It’s fitting to find a great cover on this album, since it was his cover of Kanye’s Heartless that I found meandering around the many networks of music blogs I frequent. This time it was a rendition of the Katy Perry hit “I Kissed A Girl,” which he says he covered “to see what the tune would be like with that dark undertone as a more obvious context.”

I love it. But, William Fitzsimmons is not all about covers, but he is down with a remix or two. In fact, Fitzsimmons has never had a problem with combining electronic music with with folk music. Derivatives, according to William’s website, is a multicolored re-imagining of several prominent tracks from The Sparrow and the Crow, Fitzsimmons’ well-received 2009 release. Derivatives contains several remixes of Fitzsimmons largely folk-inspired tunes – revisited and remixed in an electronic fashion – while still retaining the emotional and heartfelt core of William’s songs.

One such remix is the Mikroboy remix of “If You Would Come Back Home”.

Download William Fitzsimmons -If You Would Come Back Home (Mikroboy Remix)

If you would come back home
We could start all over
If you would come back home
I swear it would be better

There’s room left in the house
There’s food still in the pantry
I could fix you lunch
Or take you out for coffee

CMJ recently spoke with William about his new release, and he had this to say:

“I started to learn that people weren’t experiencing these songs with the same measure of darkness. For some reason, they were hearing a certain amount of hope in them, and to be honest, that began to change the way I understood them myself. So I wanted a way to hear the songs in that more positivistic way.”

They’re not the happiest songs, but I DO hear some hope. Most importantly I hear an amazing album from an artist you need to know about. Buy the albums and share this post with your friends.

And all your dumb rhymin’ words

This. Is. An excellent. Record.

“People might be surprised that anyone is still working in a long format recorded medium considering the economic climate, current trends in dissemination and consumption, i.e. the internet and mp3 players…There is so much work being produced in this moment, in this, the age of readily available prosumer recording equipment and an internet hungry for content, not to mention the mountains of old songs that exist for most listeners who, in a lifetime, will only skim the surface of that magnificent library. People might be surprised that, with all that weighing against it, buying and listening to this album will be more than just pleasurable, more than just horizon expanding. “

Kyp Malone’s new music venture is called Rain Machine. He has been writing and recording material for himself, even before getting together with the much-loved and respected group TV On the Radio. Malone joined TVotR in time to record their second record, 2003’s EP Young Liars. While performing solo, Malone went by a few different names and eventually settled on Rain Machine. His first solo album, which is self-titled, comes out September 22 on Anti-Records.

The first two releases, “Give Blood” and “Smiling Black Faces”, are excellent tracks but sandwiched between them on the record is my favorite, “New Last Name.” It’s a slow burn. Check it out:

Rain Machine -New Last Name

Oh no! Was it the line “All your dumb rhymin’ words” that summoned Kanye or was it Malone’s beard? Kanye has to interrupt everyone’s big moment! OK what is it Kanye?

I’m really happy for you Kyp, and Imaletyoufinish, but Mookie has the best beard of all time! Of all time!

Well. Mookie is working on one sweet-ass beard. But Mookie’s beard hasn’t been stroked by Stephen Colbert yet. So until that day, I think Kyp Malone might have the best one. Here’s a live shot of the very talented musician that we took when we caught TV on the Radio at OutsideLands:

Rain Machine showcases some of Malone’s best lyrics and song construction yet. But I will give no opinion and insight on the words and themes he explores on this record. You simply have to experience it yourself. You can even pre-order the vinyl below. I can’t wait to drop a needle on the actual record. That will make for quite a spritually revealing evening.

Choose your format: MP3, CD, or Vinyl…

What a catch!

[Fall Out Boy – What a Catch, Donnie ft. Elvis Costello, Brendon Urie, Travis McCoy, Alex DeLeon, & William Beckett]

They keep getting better.

They’re Fall Out Boy. And they’re not just for emo kids and screaming girls. They speak loudly to a lot of post-punk thirtysomethings. Non-emo kids, despite being unwilling to admit it, love them too. And we all know it. Pete Wentz called it almost two years ago when he said “There’s the bands that you say you like to sound smart, and there’s the bands you say you like to get laid. And then there’s the bands you really listen to.”

the little one says:
was he referring to the emotards who won’t admit they are at zia to buy their record?
the little one’s buddy says:
yes…I am positive he was…
tlo’s b says:
all of them bought one …you saw that right? or did I make that up
tlo’s b says:
I just brought a hot chick to buy mine
tlo says:
nope… they all did… they all got that 7 inch
tlo’s b says:
yeah
tlo’s b says:
that was like the alarm goinhg off that they bought it…
tlo’s b says:
awesome
tlo says:
lol
tlo’s b says:
it was a great night for that moment in the store
tlo says:
they got caught stealing condoms

…And that was back when Infinity on High was released. Sure, we could have just bought it on iTunes. But there are still some bands worth a midnight trip to the record store. Music snobs will be aghast that Fall Out Boy is slotted into that category. But give Folie a Deux a listen and it’s easy to see just how talented this fourpiece from Chicago is. And how far they’ve come.

When I hear “She’s My Winona”, (and by the way, before we give emo a bad name, let’s take a moment here to give reverence to Johnny Depp) I feel like I am listening to one of my old favorites off Take This To Your Grave or Under The Cork Tree. The “quit burning bridges and drive off of ’em” dark lyrics that get delivered so beautifully by Patrick Stump it allows for both the dry humor and the pain to emanate.

[Fall Out Boy – She’s My Winona]

But what I hear all over Folie a Deux, besides all the cameo appearances,

Elvis Costello from ELVIS COSTELLO!
Brendon Urie from Panic at the Disco
Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes,
Alex DeLeon from The Cab,
and William Beckett from The Academy Is

is what I fell in love with years ago but enhanced. What I thought couldn’t get better before, BETTER. In ALL CAPS. And it still takes my breath away after all these years. It surprises me how much better it gets. Sure, the early days were unsure and awkward. It’s mildly embarrassing to think back to those days. But as it got good, and built more and more on what was good, and went in bold directions… wait, am I still talking about FOB?

If you are looking for something BETTER, don’t look for a Kanye West remix. You want a MASHUP. Check out FOB vs White Stripes. And don’t make Baby Jesus cry. Go buy some Fall Out Boy.
