Charlie Sheen Is An Asshole, But Let’s Learn From It

“The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury.” – Marcus Aurelius

Watching the one-man circus sideshow known only as Charlie Sheen gave me some fits of anger. Why? Well, his comments on AA are what really made my blood boil. The insinuation that the ideas behind AA were “written for normal people” and that there was a specific path to go by is just disingenuous. Yes, there are the 12 steps. It doesn’t mean that one has to have rigidity in how they practice and follow through on those 12 steps. Anyhow, that wasn’t really what made me upset. It’s the fact that I’ve personally witnessed a life change positively – due to the help they provided – makes me a bit angry. My own mother hit rock bottom from alcoholism almost 20 years ago, and hit the point where she tried to take her own life.

Now, it’s my understanding that the teachings of AA are inspired by Christian teachings. Personally, I’m an atheist. My own mother grew up in a strict Irish-Catholic home, but doesn’t practice, now. She still stays with her mission to stay sober, so it does do some good. The fact that we now have a celebrity slamming a program that helps millions that have nowhere else to go is honestly showing how out of touch he is. His comments about how “special” he was only stoke those flames and show the true amount of disconnect.

His unfortunate path is his own, but he’s now acting out in a manner that affects people in society. The everyday people that he called “losers” that are addicts and know nothing else, for example. It’s sad, really. The anger I originally felt has actually turned into pity. The ranting while talking about how underpaid he was also struck a nerve, as I was an education major in college, and watch as the governors of Wisconsin and New Jersey are openly battling teachers’ unions. Teachers are underpaid. Not Charlie Sheen. This sad arrogance is 100% anger, which he denies.

So what should I do? Do I lash out? I seriously thought about it. The media does play a large role in this, as they keep giving Sheen a podium to stand on. That role is what will likely end up being Sheen’s downfall, as people will quickly tire of the pity he’s asking for. When one out of ten people in our country are without a job, you’d find nary a few that would feel for a man that spent his money irresponsibly by snorting it up his nose. The media will have to take a large part of the blame for joyously allowing one man’s self-destructive behavior to simply worsen and hit a low.

Instead of lashing out, I hit a point where I simply now want to refuse to add gasoline to the fire. The decisions he’s made serve well to teach us all. He really is right in that his kids will learn from him. However, they won’t learn the lessons he thinks. His father, Martin Sheen, has already had enough, and is simply saying that he would be there for his son. There really isn’t shame in it. I can’t say I would be a bigger or better person for wagging my finger at him, though. It’s a natural reaction, of course. My willingness to understand the wrong in being angry is part of how he instead teaches me more about myself and how I could be a better person on my own, as I hope many with drug and alcohol addictions learn to do, too.

The Beauty of Music

So recently, I found out about a band that I didn’t know of. And this led me to be reminded why music is so important. I overheard a new co-worker discussing Grizzly Bear with another co-worker. I interjected, as I had seen them live once. Five minutes of music discussion later, I got a nice compliment – “Man, you really know your shit.” Thing is, I don’t. Or at least I don’t think so. He brought up the group I am sharing today, and I hadn’t heard of them. Well, after a good night out with a few co-workers, we all eventually took a listen to these guys. Which I think we all do from time to time. We get excited about the music we like and want to share it with the world. I mean, isn’t that the whole point of this blog?

Anyhow, the group he wanted to share was Caravan Palace. Now, they’re a French band. Imagine if swing and electronica had a baby. There are some that try to say that Daft Punk is one of those influences on them, but i don’t hear it in the music they play. I’d say more with the idea that electronica can be incorporated into almost anything. This sound has been done before, though. As George could tell you, for example, I played a ton of swing-house in the years I DJed. I genuinely liked a lot of it. I even featured one of the Greens Keepers tracks on this blog a couple of years ago.

Well, these guys are less about sampling, and more about creating their own swing sound mixed with drum kicks and electronic goodness. The self-titled debut album of these guys produced the track I’m posting today. “Jolie Coquine” is definitely reminiscent of the Squirrel Nut Zippers female vocals – which is where James Curd sampled from – and is very frenetic and catchy. The video for this track is even quite creative. So enjoy! And remember that music is a very open showcase. You’re welcome to dislike music, but keeping an open mind about what is out there is very rewarding!

More…..there must be more

Not sure why, but the title used is from Derrick Carter’s “Where U At?” I guess I could say it works in this sense in that here I’m just sort of showing the extent of influence late hip-hop producer Jay Dee has had. Now, I had done a post based around one of his tracks a few months back, but this post is more to show his reach in music.

Yep. Jay Dee had a hand in that. Crazy, eh? Or how about these two songs?

Yep, more production work by Jay Dee. Having worked with Q-Tip and the Pharcyde is just the beginning, really. You guys should check out the full list of stuff he’s had a hand in. Oh, and the best part is that the video for “Drop” by the Pharcyde was a Spike Jonze product. Did you notice Ad Rock pop in there?

So the last surprise of work by Jay Dee was a Slum Village remix of “Aerodynamic” by Daft Punk. You heard right. As a way for Slum Village to avoid paying for the use of a sample, they were asked to create a remix for Daft Punk’s Daft Club, and the resulting remix is here.

So boys and girls? Now you know. And knowing is half the battle. Yo Joe! Umm…..yeah.

Today’s a Michel Gondry kind of day

Michel Gondry makes me happy. When I found out he was the director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I almost immediately went to see it in the theater. Same goes for The Science of Sleep. The latter is almost becoming prophetic in the sense that we’re watching the combination of the real world with the imagined through the internet and gaming. Soon, who’s to say we’ll be able to tell the difference? Is it a good thing that realism is brought to such a high level? At what cost? That’s a separate discussion, however. One that I could have at length over a beer or two.

Anyhow, this week’s post is more about some of the songs and videos that Mr. Gondry has done over the years. I thought about Gondry because he loves the use of stop-motion, which sounds easy, but definitely isn’t. Not all of these use that method, but the creativity he possesses can’t be denied. First off, we go with the easy one. Daft Punk‘s “Around the World”. The entire album Homework is brilliant. Hard to say about an electronica album. This video, like the one later by the Chemical Brothers, uses the elements seen as representation of the different elements used in the song.

Next is one most of us probably forgot about. Lucas. Anyone? No? Okay, well just take a listen to this song and/or watch the video and you’ll remember it pretty quickly. And yes, Gondry did direct this!

Download Lucas – Lucas With The Lid Off

How about that? Most folks probably forgot about that guy. Well, next is the one that relates to the Daft Punk video. The Chemical Brothers‘ video for “Star Guitar” at first doesn’t really dazzle anyone. Pay attention to the scenery through the train window, however, and how it enters the video. The first time I realized what Gondry did, I was simply amazed and re-watched this video another half-dozen times. It’s simply brilliant. I’m watching it again right now, and just giddy. Seriously.

Last up is the stop-motion I spoke of. He used a lot of this in The Science of Sleep, and used it with some of his videos. For The White Stripes‘ “The Hardest Button to Button”, we see it done, and one can only imagine how much work went into filming and editing this. It’s crazy the ambition this man has to create what is essentially art through motion. It’s now time for us to appreciate it.

Now, quit reading this and buy something.

Electro-break goodies!

So this week, the theme will switch from the indie-rock to the electro kitsch. Pretty funny word. Kitsch. Sounds like something you use one pinch of in a recipe. Well, it’s not. It means funky. Weird. Whatever you wanna call it. This stuff is pretty cool. So, instead of reading my droll ramblings? How about I bring you this music?

First off is something I’ve recently stumbled on. If anyone isn’t aware of who the Stanton Warriors are, then here’s a good cue to what they may be like. Basically, it’s breaks. Toss in a bit of electro feel? There you go. Well, this is their take on the classic Beach Boys song “Good Vibrations”. It’s not bad, but definitely something a bit different than what you may expect. Give this one a listen!

Download The Beach Boys – Good Vibrations (Stanton Warriors remix)

Next up is something from the boys of Soulwax. And of the robot helmet wearing duo of Daft Punk. Now, this is more a reworking than a legit remix. It still has a great feel to it, though. It’s been sped up, some rehashing of the samples throughout. More dance friendly. Which, for the Soulwax guys? Is what they wanted. If you’re a fan of either group, check out this stompin’ work. Dance your little butts off, children!

Download Daft Punk – Robot Rock (Soulwax remix)

Now, get your ass in gear. Help the economy. Stimulus shit. That crap. You’re not a real American unless you buy fifteen flags in various sizes and an album by the above. Big Brother is watching you! Don’t be a dick!

Daft Punk bootie here…..

Yes, it’s a bootleg. I ripped this one from my personal collection. The B Side does have a lot of pops in it, so be warned. Thing is, I like the pops and hissing from vinyl. It creates a much warmer feel to the music. Unless it causes skips. Because there’s hell to pay, then.

Anyhow, this is a bootleg I picked up god knows when. Probably in 2001. If you want it on wax? Here is a link for you all. This is a bootleg of Daft Punk’s “One More Time”. I can still remember where I was when I first heard this. October of 2000, and I went to the event Monster Massive out in L.A., and Armand Van Helden started his set off with this. Ridiculous. To see probably fifteen to twenty thousand kids go nuts was surreal.

That said, the track hasn’t died off in popularity much at all. This is a DJ friendly bootleg, with the B Side tossing in this random vocals saying “Alright, alright, back to your stations.” Not sure why. Fuck it. A good bootie for you all if you’re a die-hard collector of their stuff. I’d only rate it a 7 out of 10, because it does get repetitive, and I feel that if it had used more of the original song’s vocals, it would have cut down on this.

Download and enjoy!

And since these are bootlegs, I’ll just say to go buy the authentic product. Because you’re awesome if you do.

Not easily offended

Friends since childhood in Paris.

Come 1996, one group becomes Daft Punk, and the other becomes Phoenix.

Come 2009, no one has not heard of Daft Punk, but have you ever heard of Phoenix? They both have a handful of studio albums under their belt. Only one got the Grammies and the headlining gigs though. Phoenix is currently on tour to support the upcoming album, and It looks like the London, Holland, Paris, and Berlin shows are sold out. So there is that. And someone in the US has obviously heard of them: Chicago, NYC and DC have sold out as well. You can check them out if you’re planning to hit Bonnaroo.

If you were planning to skip all summer festivals because you assume that we your loyal music servants will report on them fully, you need to start contributing to our event fund. Because I don’t know if you’ve looked out the window lately, but there’s a recession out there. We do what we can. So, with that said… You’ll be at Bonnaroo right? Let us know how it is. They will also be at Austin City Limits in October, so if you’ve been a good little boy or girl and you’ve made your contribs, then we will go to that and tell you all about it. Hell, technically it seems to me like they are free during Outside Lands, so maybe we’ll see their name added to the lineup.

The new album hits US shelves on Tuesday. They previewed a few tracks from Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix when they appeared on SNL back in April. Check out Track 1, Lisztomania, here:

[Download Phoenix – Lisztomania]

Another new song they shared is called 1901. How about a remixed version? In this Ivan Beck Redub, this track is stretched out a bit and transformed into the island version. Check it out:

[Download Phoenix – 1901 (Ivan Beck Dub Remix)]

The tracks on Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix do sound more full, more developed and mature, than earlier work that I’ve been able to sample. 2004’s Alphabetical reminds me of Just Jack, whom I just love all the same. In fact, if you challenged me, I might guess that just about any of the tracks off the earlier album belonged to Mr. Jack. Check out “Everything is Everything” from Alphabetical.

This year’s album manages to remain upbeat without chewing too much bubble gum, but don’t get me wrong… You could still catch me prancing home from the pool as if leading my own parade if I had this playing in the earbuds. (Never mind that I’ve got to get that remix loaded into the Pod too!) Oh, you didn’t hear about my parade? Yeah. You need to listen to the podcast, my friend. Do you listen to the Adam Carolla podcast?

I do. Recently, The Ace Man had frontman of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Jimmy Kimmel Show announcer, Dicky Barrett. This was the first music related guest Adam has had since been getting fired from KLSX and starting his podcast.

A podcast that is the number one podcast on iTunes, by the way.

Dicky and Adam talked about lots of silly stories, but of course, my favorite topics were all the music related ones.

Dicky talked about watching the band Fear on SNL. Belushi was a huge Fear and Black Flag fan! Who knew! I had never heard of the band Fear. Apparently they are from LA and the frontman was named Lee Ving. Get it? Hope so…

They talked about a song called New York’s Alright If You Like Saxaphones

New York’s alright if you wanna be pushed in front of the subway!

New York’s alright if you like tuberculosis!

New York’s alright if you like art and jazz!

New York’s alright if you’re a homosexual!

How did I ever not hear this song? Don’t make the same mistake.

Other bands mentioned on this episode of The Adam Carolla Podcast? Oingo Boingo, Plasmatics, The Fat Boys…make sure you take a listen to this episode of his, then subscribe to his podcast. It’s usually about an hour of laughs and interesting stories! Don’t forget to subscribe to our podcast! Search iTunes for inALLcapsRadioHour…or go here!

I’m only going to heaven if it tastes like caramel

I often have trouble with electro music, and I almost always find it difficult to get through an album that suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder. But Made in the Dark by Hot Chip must match the exact coordinates of my brainwaves, because I am all over it. When Mark Pytlik from Pitchfork reviewed it, he said:

“But of all of their many virtues, focus isn’t one… A string of self-conscious interruptions, perfect pop moments, show-offy sonics, and inscrutable non-sequiturs, the lovable but flawed Made in the Dark has moments that come off as almost gluttonous– and that’s even by Hot Chip’s standards.”

He might as well have been talking about me! Am I right or am I right?

This album is a year old already, but how I suddenly became the review-every-new-album chick, I don’t know. I’m sharing this with you just because.
If you haven’t checked out Hot Chip yet, please let me introduce you.
This is a five piece band from London, all of whom possess DJ backgrounds. They found themselves in good company at this year’s Grammy awards, with “Ready for the Floor” nominated alongside Daft Punk’s eighty-fifth rendition of “Harder Better Faster Stronger” for Best Dance Recording.

I am just in love with the flow of this album, where the synth is not overused but I still get a zippy (yes I said zippy) vibe from the faster tracks, and it only took a second listen to fall right in place with the ballads that are interspersed throughout. Perhaps it’s because each track consistently possesses cute, witty, sappy, silly, or just plain inane lyrics.

This is the track whose refrain nearly made the title for this blog post. I think it’s a good representation of the album: a nice mix of the electro pop and the slow burn tracks on Made in the Dark.

[Hot Chip – One Pure Thought]

What is it, I don’t remember
Made my being so much better
If I can have just one pure thought

The boys are reportedly back at work in the studio, without any tour commitments on the horizon. The idea was originally to work fervently to release the album in Fall 2009, but they have been drawn in to play a track here or there in support of some good causes already this year, such as War Child and Crisis.

They’re a group of top blokes, I reckon. I want to share with you just one more song, and then you can get to the checkout section, because you know you want to.

[Hot Chip – We’re Looking for a Lot of Love]

Every time that we walk the streets
I try my best to keep up with the beat
You’re everything that I never could keep
I hear the sound and it starts to repeat

Animals Collecting Album totals…..

So Animal Collective recently released a new album! Yes, these weird folksy guys are releasing some more strange tunes. I have yet to take a good, long listen to their new album Merriweather Post Pavillion, but I am sure it will be sort of an extension of their last album, Strawberry Jam. I say that meaning there should be an obvious directional difference with some of the tracks, and from the little I’ve heard, it’s adding more of the spacey kitsch that made Panda Bear‘s Person Pitch such a fantastic album. And yes, the album cover is very trippy.

Well, this post is a departure from the recent long-winded stuff I’ve written lately. I’m simply giving you the first single – “My Girls” – off of the album, but also a nicely done remix that Dave Wrangler submitted my way (as well as practically every blog out there!). If I had a gig now? I’d have no qualms droppin’ this track in a house set, and have every reason to believe practically any sort of crowd would like it. This is a super DJ-friendly remix that sounds very clean and crisp. It’s one I highly suggest you guys grab from here.

The original is very spacey, and brings thoughts of the Beach Boys, circa Pet Sounds, when Brian Wilson was trying practically any drug shoved in front of him. The only complaint I have with this song is that it builds to a point, and just sort of hangs there before ending rather abruptly. Otherwise, this is a great tune. So enjoy, boys and girls!

[Download Animal Collective – My Girls]

[Download Animal Collective – My Girls (Dave Wrangler remix)]

And yes, I expect you to buy the album! With groups like this that are lesser known, it’s that much more important to help them out with a purchase. If not through us, then buy something while at their shows! That’s even more kickass. I’d probably even give you a hug. A boney, pale, Irish, drunken hug. Which really just means either I’d pass out on your lawn or start a fight with a barstool. Either way, you’re entertained.
