You blew it!

Well. We are here to help. Hopefully if you read us regularly this won’t happen again. I won’t tell anyone, but you really gotta step up too.

Ok?

THREE BANDS THAT YOU COULDA BEEN A HUGE FAN OF BUT BROKE UP BEFORE YOU EVEN GOT TO LISTEN TO THEM!

1. SPARTA
Sparta is an American alternative rock band from El Paso, Texas, formed in 2001. Jim Ward (vocalist/guitarist) and Tony Hajjar (drummer) are former members of At the Drive-In. Keeley Davis (guitarist) is the former frontman of Engine Down.

In June 2008, Ward stated that Sparta is “currently on hiatus and label-less”, and that he will be focusing on his project, Sleepercar.

Oops. Missed the opportunity to see this band live? Bummer for you. They were amazing. I got to see them twice. Blown away. I just stood there being pummeled by the awesomeness that was Sparta. Too bad you never heard of them…

[Sparta – Red.Right.Return. (Straight In Our Hands)]

2. PISTOLITA
Pistolita is an indie rock band from San Diego, California that has a real catchy pop feel underneath the punk rock grittiness.

They have previously toured as an opening act for bands such as Brand New, but it was when they toured with Saves the Day that I finally got to see them. I became a fan that night. Bought the album the next day. A few months later they broke up. Although part of this band went on to become Weatherbox, the magic that was Pistolita is gone forever. Shouldn’t stop you from picking up the album Oliver Under The Moon. It’s a great piano/rock album.

[Pistolita – Killjoy]

3. NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL
Damn. It’s ok. I missed this one too. It breaks my heart, but as this band reminds me, you can turn pain into something beautiful. Jeff Magnum is really the catalyst for this band, and the critcally aclaimed In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Critically aclaimed in the very underground kinda way.

Don’t worry.

All your favorite bands have had this album in their CD players for the last 10 years (tape players maybe….how long have we had CDs anyways?), so you have been a fan at least through some sort of weird trickle down effect. Right?

[Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Comely]

A passion ending so the world ceases turning

BFMV is easier to type than Bullet For My Valentine, and as you know I am lazy.

Which is ironic, since this post is about my Friday after Thanksgiving. Feeling guilty for my gluttony, I woke up on Black Friday, and instead of shopping, I sweated out all the turkey and booze over a stationary bicycle.
The soundtrack to my self punishment was BFMV…So loud the old lady on the bike next to me was cringing.

BFMV is a screamo band from Bridgend, Wales. I didn’t pay special attenttion to the lyrics until I got home from my workout, but they are really good, especially if you are into self-mutilation (exercise is practically self-mutilation, isn’t it?  It’s painful, I know that…)

The music is the stand-out winner for me.

Aggressive is a good word to describe the music. Another good word might be FAST. The drum and guitar work is so great, that the lead singer could be talking about how he likes mayo on his hamburgers, and I would still love it.
I haven’t listened to the band’s first album, The Poison, but it’s now on my xmas list. Do yourself a favor and pick up Scream, Aim, Fire for xmas. One for you, and one for the friend that could use a little work in the gym. They will thank you for it.

[Bullet For My Valentine – End of Days]

Watching a woman sleep can get you scared

The Eventually Home is finally out!

It’s the exact opposite of meh! It’s beautiful and gripping!

Yes, I do have a man crush on Andy Hull, but I dare you to not be amazed by this fantastic piece of work.

Everyone loves a trilogy. This is Part II.

This story is not about a Jedi, or THE ONE, or even about a man eating shark. Well…maybe a man eating whale named Emily!

i’ve been eating seaweed from a whale named emily
she could swallow me, or help swallow my pride

Really this project of Andy Hull, frontman of the band Manchester Orchestra, is about this simple thing. A man on a mission to understand why his whore of a wife cheated on him.

This man, a sailor, heads to sea. For three years. The first installment, titled perfectly, was The Bitter End.

Part II, The Eventually Home, is about his return… well, home. But is it “home” or just his desire to come to the end?

We have to wait for Part III to see.

The song we are sharing off the album is a pretty song that puts me at edge. A scorn sailor who hasn’t seen his wife in three years, watching her sleep. Has he returned to kill her? You tell me!

[Right Away, Great Captain – I Was A Cage]

Regardless of the story, it’s an amazing piece of work. Buy it. Buy two and give one to a friend.

The Drug Scouts of America

I didn’t even mean to buy a book that night.

I was at the electronics store for something else, but I was on the phone with someone who asked me how it was that I always found fiction books with drug stories in them.

How would I know?

The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star

I turned the corner and hit the book section, and it must have been fate. This was the night I would actually purchase, rather than read a random page and return to the rack, this book. Who wouldn’t want to read about the crazy, drug-fueled, sex-filled shenanigans of a bona fide rock star? It’s safe to say that I HATE Mötley Crüe, so I suppose that is what had always held me back from actually bringing The Heroin Diaries home with me.

Today was the day I was gonna get over it.

I’m glad I did.

“Sometimes, if I didn’t know better…I’d think that my dealer is trying to kill me.”

Don’t get me wrong; this book is not amazing or anything. It’s decent: I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of rock and roll or a good collection of drug and debauchery stories. I’m glad I bought this book because it brought me to the “Heroin Diaries soundtrack!”

I know…that’s what I said when I discovered that Nikki Sixx had created a track for each chapter of the book.

Just another way to make a fucking dollar…

Once I realized it wasn’t actually a Crüe album, I decided to buy it. Not only are these tracks a true departure from Crüe music, it’s a fantastic album!

Dark, compelling, and polished. An album people notice. I mean, listen to the opening track! Yeah. You’re hooked.

[Sixx A.M. – Xmas in Hell]

The band Sixx A.M. released the single “Life is Beautiful” for mainstream radio, and it’s a great song…but my personal favorite is a track called Courtesy Call.

[Sixx A.M. – Courtesy Call]

It’s a tongue-in-cheek track about the nightmare that Nikki and the band caused hotel staff.

If you’re like me, you would have avoided this album (and book) like the plague. But I dove in for you, because that’s what I do. Take a deep breath; the water’s fine.

I Slept With Someone at inALLcaps.com and All I Got Was This Stupid Blog Written About Me

I am over 30 and wear a FOB t-shirt quite regularly. I recently had the album Infinity on High on constant repeat in the car. I love EMO music and I might need some help.

Granted, I am not busy at home cutting myself, nor do I have an EMO haircut. I do have a strong fondness for dark zip-up hoodies, and I have a collection of band tees. Maybe this music is made for 30 year olds? I wonder if some pimply fourteen year old can really pick up on the heavy irony that Pete Wentz lays down in some of his lyrics. Or maybe fourteen year olds find the misheard versions better anyways!

It’s not all about Wentz and his amazing song writing abilities, but it’s that magical combo of Patrick Stump’s distinctive voice and solid vocal range (although it seems that it doesn’t hold up in some of the footage and audio I have seen/heard of them in concert).

I had a hard time dealing with the fact that every album seemed to be a change in style or direction for them. From hardcore punk to experimenting with R&B. When it comes down to it though, it’s something to be embraced if it’s done well.

From what I have had the privilege of listening to of Folie à Deux, their upcoming release scheduled for late 2008, it’s another big change, and one that I am going to welcome with open arms.

The rumors are rampant about this album already the closer we get to the 12.16.2008 release date. Kanye West will make an appearance. Lil’ Wayne will make an appearance. (Jay-Z showed up on Infinity on High, in case you slept on that one.) Pharrel has produced a song. Even Debbie Harry supposedly gets on the bus to throw down some vocals. I don’t LOVE Blondie, but having the frontwoman of one of the most well-known NYC punk bands make a guest appearance on your record is a big deal.

I really want to share these two leaked songs of the new Folie à Deux (seriously, that is the worst name in history for an album, but prove me wrong in the comments if you got one worse) album, but DMCA violations are being handed out a lot to many popular blogs, with targets especially directed at songs off this album. Not sure if inallcaps is big ENOUGH yet, but considering all the press releases we are getting now, and the new collab with errorFM, I think someone at the labels might finally be watching! (Thanks for the page views!) So…maybe I try to get in a few of their old songs? I guess it’s the best I can do. I suggest looking for those leaks on the interwebs anyways. I am convinced it will get you to pick up Duex, and that’s really my goal anyways.

Oh! Guess what? I dug up a Kanye West/FOB mashup, which is at least timely and relevant.

[Download Kanye West/Fall Out Boy – I Don’t Care I Still Love Her]

One of my favorite things about Fall Out Boy has been that they get creative with their song titles. This one might be my favorite title for a song ever:

It dawned on me that I need new home furnishings.

Shenanigans are always afoot in politics. If McCain finds a way to win while Obama has held a lead for much of the campaign, it might look like April 29, 1992 all over again.

Though they’d rather not discuss it, local law enforcement agencies are planning for possible civil unrest following Tuesday’s election.

“We have no intelligence indicating there will be problems,” Fulton County Assistant Police Chief Gary Stiles said. “Law enforcement must deal with ‘what ifs’ and worst-case scenarios. What if there’s an extended power outage at a polling place?”
Similar preparations are under way across the country, fueled partly by Internet rumors and crystallized within recent comments by Democratic strategist James Carville on CNN.

“But you stop and contemplate this country if [Barack] Obama goes in and he has a consistent five-point lead and loses the election, it would be very, very, very dramatic out there,” he said.

Another concern: excessive celebrations following a potentially historic outcome, as
sometimes seen following sports championships.

[Sublime – April 29, 1992]

I could be wrong. But the left is so confident already that Obama is going to win, that I can easily see how they will probably feel like some fraud has taken place if suddenly McCain pulls through.

Like a good boy scout…be prepared.

walking around with his flapping b-cups

So… I realized today that I have some interesting IM conversations that relate to music that I could share with you all. I added pictures, video, music, and links to the conversation to make it more interesting. I left all the retarded spelling and grammar mistakes just for shits and giggles.

Detox Retox was formed in 2007 by friends Mike Parker, Nate Frey, Kevin Glass, and Kabir Khanna. They played their first show at WMUC-FM (University of Maryland campus radio, in College Park, MD) in early 2008, performing on the station’s long-running Third Rail Radio program.

In July 2008, Detox Retox went into the studio with friend and producer Joe Mitra to record their debut EP, Hard to Swallow, at Wired Wrists II in Brookville MD. The record was released at a show at The Red and the Black in DC last month, and it is currently available in digital format through eMusic, iTunes, and Amazon MP3, or in hard copy through Kunaki. The band plans to continue playing shows, writing songs, and acquiring new fans over the coming months. Further information can be found on their Myspace.

This is the leadoff track from their debut EP, entitled Hard to Swallow:

We did a quick interview with the boys, and we are still busting up over some of their answers!

KG=Kevin Glass (bass), NF=Nate Frey (lead guitar), MP=Mike Parker (vocals/guitar), KK=Kabir Khanna (drums).

What is your opinion on the influence of music blogs on the music industry?

KG: The internet has allowed a democratic revolution in music, and blogs are obviously related to this. Previously there were only a few magazines and news outlets that the vast majority of people digested their music from. Now there are blogs that cater to every audience, every genre, on both a local and national level, that really has allowed everyone to take part in the process.
NF: Yeah, it’s been huge. I think blogs and digital distribution have a lot to do with the decentralization of the music industry in recent years and the resurgence of independent labels. Blogs are also a really effective promotional tool, as well, I think. At least they have been for us.

What inspires you to make music?

MP: Scott Stapp.
NF: Yeah, definitely Scott Stapp.

Tell us about your most memorable gig thus far!

KK: Probably our EP release show in DC. A lot of our friends came out to support us, and we had a blast playing.

NF: For me, it’s our show at Asylum in DC in August, because I think it was the first time I really felt like we had reached a point with our fans where they were going to come out to every show in big numbers and have a good time. Also because it was a terrible, terrible show from a performance perspective. But hey, people didn’t seem to care.
KG: Our second show that we ever played was at an actual legit music venue (as opposed to a dive bar, like our first show) and we did a terrible job with publicity and getting the word out. There was a great touring band opening for us, Girl in a Coma, and we were the locals who were expected to draw a crowd. We fucked up big time, and we deserved the tiny crowd we had. Nate and Kabir picked a memorable good show, but I think that poor showing on our part was a great learning experience that motivated us and propelled us forward as a band.

What three artists you would love to collaborate with?

KK: Michael Parker, Nate Frey, and Kevin Glass. Haha no seriously… if we’re talking actual artists, I’d love to collaborate with Mozart, Shakespeare, and Leonardo Da Vinci.

NF: David Byrne, Neil Young, Thurston Moore
KG: Nate and Kabir have to go all faux-pretentious. Who the hell is Thurston Moore? What has Mozart ever done lately? I’m going with Timbaland, R. Kelly, and Hugh Hefner.
MP: Vin Diesel, t.A.T.u., and Nicholas Cage

Have you ever laughed until something you were drinking came out your nose?

KK: Yeah, but I was drinking snot, so nobody really noticed.

Been pushed into a pool with all your clothes on?

KK: Haha almost, but I saw my friend coming and pushed her in first. Then I realized it wasn’t a swimming pool but a shark tank, and it wasn’t my friend, but a small child. That was the day I vowed never to drop acid at the aquarium again.

Eaten alligator meat?

MP: Yeah. It’s true what they say… tastes just like people.

Ever jump out of an airplane?

KG: This one time I did. I was on a routine flight from Russia back to the United States, and a bunch of terrorists plus Gary Oldman hijacked my flight. They took my family hostage and I faked jumping out in an escape pod, but actually stayed on board in the luggage compartment, overpowered the terrorists with my superior wit and a satellite phone that ran straight to Glenn Close, and finally was able to escape via a tripwire attached to a marine rescue plane.

Have you been to more than 10 countries?

KK: Pssh! I’ve been to more than 10 continents.

KG: Best five: Switzerland, England, Egypt, Israel, Texas. Worst five: France, France, France, France, France.
MP: You’re wrong. France has invented everything I love: Bikinis, ménage a trois, the French kiss, Audrey Tautou…

What did your last incoming text message say?

KG: “Lincoln freed the slaves.”

KK: “I know. I knew they were after me.”

What was the last thing you yelled out loud?

KK: “Shut up and pull!”

NF: Not sure, but probably “FUCK!”
KG: “Nate, if you don’t play a one-five-six-four power chord progression, I quit this fucking band!”
MP: “This is one of the best poops I’ve taken in my entire life!”

Sack the quarterback…

They say “they never really miss you til you dead or you gone”
So on that note i’m leaving after the song

NEW YORK (AP) — DJ AM, who survived a plane crash last month in South Carolina, will appear on tour with Jay-Z.

DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, will join the rap mogul Wednesday at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, said Jenni Weinman, the celebrity disc jockey’s publicist.

It will be his first performance since suffering severe burns in the Sept. 19 crash at the main airport in Columbia that killed four passengers.

“He’s the greatest rapper in the world,” the 35-year-old disc jockey told People.com. “This is the biggest thing that’s happened in my career.”

Fucking dude survives a plane crash! Now this! I need HIS lucky underpants. DJ AM, with the help of Eli Escobar, just did a remix of my favorite Weezer song off the Red album. Troublemaker.

[Download Weezer – Troublemaker (Escobar and DJ AM Remix)]

Mr. Goldstein is a lucky man. I wonder if his shoe collection somehow saved his life?

BTW. The First track up top is a never released track off a never to be released album by Danger Mouse. When Jay-Z released the black album he also released the a cappellas. Well an unknown Danger Mouse decided to use the a cappellas overtop some music he created completely from the the Beatles White Album. Hence the album was called the Grey Album. It’s an amazing piece of work!

Maverick!
