The least you could do is try to act surprised

Here it is again. Festival Season in full swing. If you’ve been to, or even considered, a music festival in the last few years you may have heard of Tokyo Police Club. It’s almost as if they formed for the sole purpose of performing at festivals. Within two years of becoming a band, they played Coachella, Lolla, Bumber, Glastonbury, and Reading & Leeds. All in the same year.
In 2010 they will be doing some European festivals, Squamish, and… Outside Lands.

As you probably know, inALLcaps had some representation at Outside Lands last year and I’ve been turned a bit inside out with the decision not to attend this year. And up until now this was a secret: Tokyo Police Club was my main reason for trying to hold out so long and convince Mookie to go.

There is something soothing in the lead singer’s voice and something jiggedy in the music that makes it feel like something you should always be listening to.

Infectious. That’s what it is.

Tell me what’s the first
Very first record you owned
’cause I’ve got no plans if you don’t
No plans if you don’t

And I can’t decide which is my favorite track on Champ, released Jun 8. But Track 2, “Favourite Colour,” is pretty damn enjoyable.

Download Tokyo Police Club – Favourite Colour

Honestly I like each track more than the last. And I am starting to get really torn between going to Outside Lands just to see these boys, going to Hawaii, buying a car, paying tuition… Hmmmmmmmm…

Check out their first released video from the new album, for the track “Boots of Danger (Wait Up)”. Friggin adorable dogs swimming. No really, trust me. I never knew dogs who put their front paws in the water before going in. I thought they all just got a running start. I don’t know about the one who appears to be getting himself out at the wall though. Did I pay too much attention to detail on this video?

It happens.

You’re going to buy this album now right? I don’t know how you can survive the rest of the year without it.

The Playlist of My Life

Soundtrack of My Life is a free service provided by Billboard.com that creates a playlist with a song associated with a milestone in your life. Your first kiss, the day you got your license, that one time when you were incarcerated…

You input a date for each of these moments and the service automatically creates a playlist containing songs that were at the top of the charts in that period. When your playlist is created, you can listen to a small preview of your songs. If you register to Billboard.com, you can also share your tracks on social media or embed a widget with your playlist on your site.

So, here is Mookie’s playlist, sans actual dates.

I figure it’s more fun if you try to figure out the timeline based on the song!

The Day Mookie Was Born
50 Ways to Leave Your Lover – Paul Simon

Great song…glad Dad didn’t leave Mom though…

Memorable First Kiss
Roll With It – Steve Winwood

I can’t remember her name, but I remember that this was the first kiss where I also got to second base. She was a beautiful dark-haired, olive-skinned girl who was far more mature than me at the time… even though we were the same age. If I knew then, what I know now…

First Drink
Justify My Love – Madonna
I am 100% confident that Madonna was not playing as I took my first unauthorized sip of the magic nectar. Alas, she marks the moment regardless.

Got My Drivers License
I’m Too Sexy – Right Said Fred
I failed it a few times before I finally passed. The second time I took it, I had a strong feeling that I had failed from the comment about not yielding at a red light right turn. My dad never came to a complete stop at right turn on a red light if it was safe to do so… So, when I saw some serious scribbling I decided it was time to give the examiner a crazy ride. I drove fast and took chances! I even skidded into the DMV parking lot. Needless to say my Dad just laughed when he looked at the examiner’s face after returning to the DMV. I passed with flying colors on the third time by the way.

Frist Cigarette
To Be With You – Mr. Big

Actually…I’m pretty sure I tried smoking before this point in my life…but it was around this time that I finally inhaled properly. I know because I attempted to cough out my left lung. Ah…that light-headed moment, my mind dizzy with a real dose of nicotine, is a moment that I suppose I regret today, since I still have the habit. I won’t smoke forever. I plan on quitting soon. I wanna be smoke-free by 35 at the latest. It gets harder the older you get. I know that for sure.

First time I kissed TLO?
London Bridge – Fergie
Fergie [ft. Marina] – “London Bridge (Bonde do Rolê A+B by Luminfire)” [Direct — Left Click Only]
Meeting TLO has definitely been monumental in my life. Not only is she hot and and great in bed, but she shares my love of music. This blog would not have been possible or successful without her. That night outside the bar, I remember her being unsteady and panting for a kiss… What a great moment. I wish we had a great song to mark it, but sadly…Fergie it is. She is hotter than the Ferg, in case you were wondering.

Went to Jail
The Sign – Ace of Base

I guess it WAS a sign. I was heading in all the wrong directions. My life was a mess. Well, I cleaned it up. Was a turning point though. No doubt. By the way…I suggest not giving the big black man a “phone check”. Things get tense after that.

Graduated College
Fallin’ – Alicia Keys
Alicia Keys is still hot right now. Maybe you have seen her at the VMAs with Jay-Z performing Empire State of Mind. She steals the thunder from Hova in this song in my opinion. It’s an amazing song, but would have fell flat with out her vocals in the mix.

Today!
Pearl Jam – The Fixer
I would like today to be a milestone. This post. Although it’s not number one today, Pearl Jam’s latest single is number two! (1st is Alice in Chains – Check My Brain…and I just don’t think it’s that great of a song.) The song might be an Obama versus Bush song. The song might be a fuck you to the labels. (This album of PJ is released on its own label, MonkeyWrench Records). Whatever it is, it’s an upbeat rock song by one of my favorite bands! I just saw Pearl Jam at San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival, and was very pleased. I even have a decent live recording of Animal from this show that I want to share! (What! Why not The Fixer? You can download it here from the blog tsururadio.com if you really must!

Is that what I am about to hear with this Portugal dude?

“What a lovely day, yeah, we won the war.
May have lost a million men, but we’ve got a million more.”

In my quest to figure out the gut wrenching that is the San Francisco Outside Lands schedule, I discovered a band that I like and want to share with you.

The band is Portugal. The Man. According to Wiki, Portugal. The Man is an American rock band from Wasilla, Alaska and based in Portland, Oregon.

It’s an odd name for a band, but wiki explains that as well:

“A country is a group of people,” guitar player and vocalist John Gourley explains. “With Portugal, it just ended up being the first country that came to mind. The band’s name is ‘Portugal’. The period is stating that, and ‘The Man’ states that it’s just one person.” The name has more personal meaning as well: Portugal. The Man was going to be the name of a book that Gourley had planned to write about his father and his many adventures.

The opening track on their latest album, The Satanic Satanist, reminds me a lot of a band called Dispatch. The music and the lyrics are fantastic. Fantastic and timely. In a time when people are up in arms over health care but not giving two shits about our sons and daughters in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The song is called “People Say”.

This new album is filled with great songs. Check out The Sun and Work All Day for some other gems.

Just in case you are going to Outside Lands, then we will see you at Panhandle Solar Stage Saturday at 3:10PM to catch Portugal. The Man. If I can convince TLO that is. In fact, you can listen to us hash out our Outside Lands schedule on our upcoming podcast. Look for it here!

Form in an orderly queue outside your house

We just found out that Tenacious D has replaced The Beastie Boys at San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival.

A lot of attendees are pissed.

Does Tenacious D belong at a music festival?

WHY THE HELL NOT? Can you imagine another way you could have THAT MUCH FUN? I caught a video of their live performance at Reading, and areyoukiddingmerightnow it’s super very awesome.

Not that they are to be compared in any way to Tenacious D, but I think of this example because as I heard Track 9 of We Were Promised Jetpacks’ These Four Walls this morning at 4 AM, I thought,

This is the type of song you want performed when you’re at a music festival.

Take a listen to “Short Bursts” and see:

[Download We Were Promised Jetpacks – Short Bursts]

Glasgow. Yes, that’s right. You’re hearing a Scottish brogue. In fact, the Scottish Arts Council helped them with funding to get themselves over to SXSW this year. It seems there are no other festivals on the lineup at this time, but they will be coming back to the States for a tour this fall.

I’m loving them. These Four Walls is actually their debut album despite having formed a good six years ago. Each song is well thought-out, with all elements contributing from their proper place in the foreground or background of the track. And this is what makes up the energy that this whole album puts out.

Speaking of that energy, how about a love song that isn’t slow and melancholy, but throws all those heartsick feelings into a power ballad of the indie persuasion?

That’s right. Press play and enjoy “Roll Up Your Sleeves”:

[Download We Were Promised Jetpacks – Roll Up Your Sleeves]

Roll Up Your Sleeves is one of two singles put out from this record. Don’t wait and wonder if it’s going to hit the frequencies here. Just buy the album, share this post with your friends, and spread the love. You have a new favorite band.

Glorified version of a…

FEEL SO MANLY!

I am taking The Little One to the San Francisco Outside Lands music and art festival.

I’ve been thinking about this festival a lot, and decided to throw a post together about it. Share some info about the festival, share a story about each of the three main headliners, and a song from each!

It’s been a long time since I went to a music festival like this. It was getting depressing to read about Coachella, burning man, Bonaroo, SXSW year after year and what I had missed.

The main headliners are Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, and the Beastie Boys.

I have previously seen PJ and the Beastie Boys…but it must be a good ten years since I have seen either. In fact, it’s quite possible that it’s closer to 15. (/frown)

You can imagine how stoked I am to go, just based on the line up alone! Then I read more about the festival, and I just get giddy! I just read about Winehaven! “If music is not enough for you mookie, we will throw in your next favorite love: EATING!”

From the Outside Lands website:

Music isn’t the only thing that rocks in San Francisco. Local wine and food artisans make the Bay Area a delicious place to live. Outside Lands celebrates this tradition with its Winehaven tent in the Speedway Meadow. Winehaven features dozens of California’s top winemakers and great local chefs serving up their freshest stuff. In the courtyard, cheese and charcuterie makers join Hog Island Oyster Company to ensure that no appetite get’s left behind. With over 50 wines to taste and an unbelievable selection of local bites, Winehaven is the best picnic spot in Golden Gate Park.

Jealous? You can still buy tickets!

Ok. On to the music and the stories!

Pearl Jam

[Download Pearl Jam – Go]

I remember waiting at midnight outside my local record store for this album to be sold! It was the first time I had ever stood in line in the middle of the night for a CD. Man, was it worth it. When I got that bad boy playing and the first song, “Go” came through the speakers, it was all worth the wait.

I had sorta given up on Pearl Jam somewhere after No Code. I think I had become jaded with Pearl Jam’s attempts to do things differently in a traditional sense. Less with the sounds on the album, although there was a significant change, but the way they boycotted ticketmaster and refused to make anymore music videos. In 2006, Rolling Stone described the band as having “spent much of the past decade deliberately tearing apart their own fame.”

Sometime later, after seeing the fall out of the record industry and its demise, I began to understand the moves Pearl Jam was making. Now that I am older, I can understand the weight and turmoil the band was experiencing in a brighter light by weighing my own life and issues.

Now, coming full circle, I am just as giddy to see PJ in San Francisco as I was at 11:59PM outside that Warehouse Music store.

Dave Matthews Band

[Download Dave Matthews Band – Go]

Never seen DMB live before. First times are always exciting. Dave Matthews Band was one of the staples on the jukebox at my buddies bar. Let me paint a picture. My buddy was the new bartender working graveyard shifts at a slow dive bar. He would ask me and my roommate to come down and hang out, just so there would be a few people in the bar looking like they were having a good time.

My roommate and I would come in at 1AM after work, or sometimes just wander in from home in our pajama pants and t-shirts to play cards and drink beers for 3 or 4 hours just about every night he was working. During these heated card games where various amounts of wagers were placed, we would throw $10 or $20 dollars into the jukebox, and Dave Matthews was always in the list. I think my roommate, a dude who loved chick flicks and crazy women, was the big DMB fan. As you can imagine, I ended up singing along, and becoming a fan of the band. I really don’t like any album except Under the Table and Dreaming though, but that album will always hold a place in my mind that is associated with shuffling cards and the stink of stale beers and cigarette smoke.

The Beastie Boys

[Download The Beastie Boys – High Plains Drifter ]

Click on the photo of the Beastie Boys and take a moment of silence for these badly aging hip hop geniuses.

I remember floating in the Lazy River of our local water park with my friend, trying to sing Paul Revere from beginning to end with out messing up!

My favorite Beastie song is High Plains Drifter. I love the cocking of the shotgun, and the vocal layering in the song. I love all the weird samples weaved in also.

I have seen the Beastie Boys before. It was another festival, and there were thousands of people and I was squished in the pit. Ass to elbows; you could not move if you wanted to. I saw people bloodied and beaten trying desperately to get out of the pit to get medical attention. It must have been like being lost at sea for those poor souls. Well…They soon figured out that the way out was on top. There were dozens of wounded exiting the pit on the hands and heads of the crowd. It was one of these wounded souls who hurt me. I saw him coming. I saw that giant steel toe shoe headed my way. No where to go though, so I braced for impact. By the end of the night my head looked like I had road burn. It was not pretty.

Buy some music from these artists, there must be a CD you are missing from their broad discography.
