Yep. More Radiohead.

So it seems this is a trend lately. Radiohead. More Radiohead. A smattering more of some Radiohead. Oh, and some Thom Yorke tossed in for good measure. Well, deal with it! They are pretty much awesome. Not lying. So for this week? Let’s just say I’ve got some lovely stuff for you.

If you ask around, I am sure you will get a varied response as to what a person’s favorite Radiohead song is. I mean, their body of work is ridiculously large, and save for their debut album of Pablo Honey, you will probably hear any number of songs off of any album mentioned as a favorite. For me, it is one song that stands out on an album that – like most of their albums – took a lot of time to grow on me. Kid A really struck me as very different initially. “Idioteque” was one of those songs that blew me away initially, though, and it still does. Last year, deluxe versions of many of their old albums were released, including this one, and there is a wonderful live version of this track on BBC One Sessions. Enjoy it.

Last week, you’ll recall that I threw a new track by Holy Fuck up on our little corner of the internet. Well, unbeknownst to me, they have remixed the track “Nude” off of their wonderful In Rainbows album. Of all of the remixes I’ve heard, I have gravitated to this one the most. You guys be the judge of this one.

And damnit, I love that Idioteque track so much, that I’ve even posted the video for you guys here. Creepy video, but it has a strong message. And hell, considering all that’s out there? I don’t even know if this is the actual music video. Whatever. I like it!

Buy stuff. It’s the American way. Go into debt. That sorta stuff.

Holy Fuck!

No, the title of today’s post isn’t unabashed obscenity for the sake of. It’s an actual band. I had a chance to see these guys about four years ago when Holy Fuck were opening for Wolf Parade. Basically, this was full on instrumental sorta stuff that used whatever the band could find. Old beat up Casio keyboards, for example.

Well, come to find out that on May 11th, they will be releasing another full length, titled Latin. Chances are pretty good that you will like the album if you dig this first single, simply titled “Latin America”. It’s not too far off from where we’ve seen this band, so I’d assume that fans of theirs won’t be too disappointed by their stuff. Here’s “Latin America”.

On a related note when it comes to obscenities in band names, another group that would probably pique the interest of some is Fuck Buttons. They released a gem of a single a few years ago titled “Sweet Love For Planet Earth”, and the fucking song is epic. For real. I think I might’ve cried when I heard it first. Nah. Not really. I’m not that sensitive. So here’s another dose of a band with ‘Fuck’ used well in the band’s name.

Go buy some stuff and be a good American.

A little happy stuff to make everyone feel good

So I’m writing this feeling quite under the weather right now. And I would’ve loved to have posted a song that sort of fits that theme. The Edmonton band Shout Out Out Out Out just released their second album earlier this year, and I heard the track “Bad Choices” while leaving work last night. And loved it. It reminded me of their track “Chicken Soup For The Fuck You” off of their debut Not Saying/Just Saying. Hence the sick stuff reminding me to maybe post that song.

Well, I unfortunately couldn’t find the latter, but the former, on their new album Reintegration Time, serves to help expose the band to more people, just as well. It’s a beautiful track that reminds me a bit of Holy Fuck’s “Lovely Allen” from 2007. Synth heavy and chugging along, you can’t help but feel uplifted and afterwards happy by the continual upbeat feel. It’s a winner for this year, for sure!

Next up is a track I’m not really sure about. Julian Casablancas – frontman for The Strokes – is set to release his debut album Phrazes For The Young next month. The first single, entitled 11th Dimension, is a catchy, but overall a pretty empty track. The solo careers by so many of these niche rock bands always seems to fall flat. It’s not a bad track, but it’s overly simplistic while trying to be a bit phony about some purported complexity to the song. Bad synth stabs can’t really save this one in the long run. I want to like this track, but am very much on the fence on it.

Last up is a cover of a track I ran across a few years back, and am not sure what reminded me about it, but it could be due to all the talk I’ve come across involving Arcade Fire. This is a cover of “No Cars Go” by fellow Canadian Bryce Kushnier, otherwise known as Vitaminsforyou. I’m not sure what it is about this cover I love so much, but it could be that it is done in a very original fashion while still maintaining the original to an extent that doesn’t trample all over the original. A great cover, and a rather unknown one to most, at that! Take a listen and see if you also like it.

That is it for this week. Again, please support these artists! Buying even one song you like sends a strong message that you really do support what they are trying to bring everyone!

To be lost that their loss is no disaster

Sampling. Stealing. Borrowing.

Or an attention-deficit tribute to everything your life has ever
seen, experienced, appreciated, and created.

Which is about how I feel right now, so I am glad I chose Crocodiles for today’s post. Picture the teen-angst rock-out library scene in The Breakfast Club. Being a kid of the 80’s, there are times when this is all I can see in my head. Punch yourself in the face, hurdle over some library shelves, and scream until the glass cracks. Rock out alone. Rock out with your friends. Straddle something and thrash your head. Drop to the floor in convulsions.

Allow all the pictures, scenes from your life, to flip past you in a jumbled and frenetic form.

Settle down for a moment of introspection, and then do it all over again.

And that’s how this album, “Summer of Hate”, plays out to me. It was released in April of this year. Check out one of the more manic tracks, Refuse Angels.

You’ve got to find this album. I Wanna Kill is worth the price of the whole thing, yet I’m not going to share it here, and is one of the greatest tributes to pop-genre sampling that I’ve heard in awhile. Go buy it.
And then go see them live. A lot of these shows are with an interesting electronica band called Holy Fuck.

Meanwhile, I’m going to get back to my brooding and random study of American poetry.
